lightmap tutorial
http://www.web3d-fr.com/article.php3?id_article=59

The problem I have is the 3DS MAX plugin (called Luminaire ) used in the article isn't available anymore.

The website of the writer of the tutorial is also down. Maybe the email is still working.

I tested the links myself they work. I've added the direct download link to the plugin itself.

"discontinued" means ummm....
"interompre" is the closes french word I could find. Another word (which would work in this case) would be redundant or canceled.

PostSubject: now I know why no one uses the inbuilt shadow renderer   Sat 9 Sep - 6:11

Basically if you install XP SP2 on any version of Max less than 7 several things stop working. Including 'render to texture' which is the create lightmaps function.

so basically thanks to microsoft we are screwed and forced to reinstall xp with only sp 1.

Annoyingly the demo of Max 8 I got off a magazine cover disk has a non working 'render to texture' function also.

Its mad, there is an inbuilt lightmap function, but we can't use it. No point in me writing a tutorial on using it now, as most people still have Max 5 or even 3.1.

Ok...
As Fabricator said "render to texture" doesn't work anymore on 3ds max 5.
But i've got a little technique to make some nice textures with lights effects.
It's just working wit some boxes. I mean just some walls because on a sphere it doesn't have the effect you will understand.

You start to build your scene as you want. I just put 3 walls for this tuto.

After, you put the textures you want. I took textures from Lemog3d.

You put the lights as you want too with the effect you want.
http://www.fersen3d.com/tuto/screen3.jpg

After, you create a camera and you put it for seeing all the first wall.
You play with the Lens and the FOV.

You change the Perspective view for the Camera01 view. You can make a render for seeing the light effect. As you see we've got the picture of the wall. The problem is that we have the second wall and the ground. We just want to make a render of the first wall.

For having the effect we want. In the camera parameters click on Clip Manually in the Clipping Planes window. You will see a red box appear near the camera. If it doesn't change the value of Near Clip.

Now, we've got the picture of our 1rst wall. You save the picture.

You do the same thing for the second wall and the ground.
[img]http://www.fersen3d.com/tuto/screen8.jpg[/img
]

You cut the picture for having just the picture of the wall. You can do it with photoshop or the gimp or anything you want.

After, you just have to come back to 3ds max and put our 3 images as textures to our walls. You delete the camera and the light.

Smile

Of course there's nothing more the baking textures. I mean the render to texture.

I found it on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTC83q7wsCY&feature=related

I tried it and it's working in 3ds max... but the problem is when i export it in vrml there is no texture on my object...
If someone can help me ?

Rolling Eyes Sorry, Fersen, I can't help with that. Long time not using Max (nor any other 3D tool). I guess there were some checkboxes to be checked in the exporter, but you've probably tryed them all.

You've done a great job with the workarround (yes Alain, it should be able to render any shadow or light you've got projected to a plane surface).

Does someone know if Blender can render to texture?

Another usefull tool could be lightmapmaker.... wasn't a link to it's demo somwhere in this forum? Or was it at Donza's ... it was a limited demo anyways.

scratch

Pitty... light and shadow -mapping via baked textures would have been one of the most appealing effects for vrml worlds.

Huggs,

Peter pig
