PostSubject: 3d inmersive et la ergonomie (GUIs, Directories, Displays)   Sat 16 Jul - 21:28

Hello ... this space is - may be - for Raging Storm :

If you think about 3d-directories you automatically think about Raging Storm Very Happy

He is working hard since ever ago on several ways to display links to worlds ... artwork ... and any thing to be clicked at ...

It's not just modelling and vrml scripting ... i guess Raging's main work (and the mostly unseen part) is the server side scripting, for dynamically generating the anchors or so ... he will tell us for sure Very Happy just let Isa1 (mon fleur des primtemps... kidnapped by the ugly Oxbow ...) convince him.

But at the same time, I want to place here one question to the community that is driving me mad since ages and could be somehow related :

Making an almost decent html document with interactive content, changing it's aspect while clicking-arround, with some nice visual effects etc. ... and making it work on several different browsers (M$IE... Mozilla...) is a brainblasting work, sometimes just impossible Rolling Eyes

Now let's think about "perverting" - pardon Anne - vrml for doing above mentioned work : It would be pretty easy ... letting stuff get transparent while clicking at it ... morphing some parts of the document ... funny transitions ... why nobody uses vrml for his html documents ? You could forgett about styles (and style-shits) and all related, about layers, id's etc ...

One problem for doing so is the limitation of text display : text nodes come up with hard work for the renderer (internally vrml text is a lineSet or even a faceSet) and don't look very nice... converting the full text into a texture is not a way (heavy, static, not nice) ... Sad

I have read about some approaches trying (or succeeding) to use one texture per font and character set (all characters at one texture) and you just map the character you want to use upon one surface ... must be easy to implement, don't know how many ressources it takes, if it works fine.

Does anybody know an example for this approach ? I don't want to reinvent the wheel (my speciality).

Next problem :

Once you use vrml for creating your web-page you will try to go as much 3D and immersive as possible ... the result will be a world instead of a page ... I have seen real vrml labyrinths trying to be usefull for showing pictures. I really prefer a flat Photo-Album ... no need for Ariadne there.

I guess Raging has thaught a lot about this... he is the master of 3d-directories - and I see he has choosen a circular display for his actual galleries/directories ... that's not a banal decision, sure.

Raging : Tell me the secrets you have found out about the ergonomy of diplays, please... so we will not make the same mistakes another one made long ago...

Well, anybody is interested on working out this confusing idea?

Bissoux

Labyrinthe images, immersion et dynamique.

ya te lo commentare...
_____

Trato hecho.

pig !

this is a very interesting thema.
Sadly if you only speak french or spain here, I cant read %(
translations?

It's an old dream of me (and not only me) to surf the web not in 2d with 'active' content included, but in 3d with included 2d.
While the most stuff is 2d (html) a 3d-browser that can display 2d sites inside would be great.

there are some trys about:
VOS.org 'cristalzilla'
and http://www.spatialknowledge.com/projects/clara/

Very Happy hahaha Hermi ... we could introduce german into the thread and the confusion would be complete Laughing Laughing Laughing

Na, was denkst Du darüber Question Question

Heheh ... oakay, sorry for the spanish but as only my dear Jicer was posting here we enjoyed using our common protocoll Cool

Thanx for the links, I'll put one eye upon them and also will try to bring some examples here ... I have seen a lot ... arghhh ... where are they ... drunken

You knew that Sun and M$ are both working out a real 3D GUI ??? ... I wonder what they will come up with Rolling Eyes ...

Anyhow... I guess that it's a dangerous and wrong target to throw the user into a immersive 3D laberynth for e.g. "exploring windows" ... the screen is 2D, the mouse is 2D ... and most (well : all) content to be shown is 2D ... so what is 3d good for ? ... the main improvement I expect from bringing vrml on to the desktop/browser is to make interactive or dynamic visualizations more spectacular and easy to create.

Well as far as making a usable 3d image gallery, I'm not game to mess with that concept. Someone else do it tongue

This game has text created using textures, Roland was suppost to release the PROTO involved as public domain, only he never got around to it Sad

www.smeenk.com\vrml\dragonstone\dragonstone.wrl

Anyway what you want is the RSP_BitmapText proto, its usages and the various textures involved.
ie: this texture:
www.smeenk.com\vrml\dragonstone\images\dragontext.png

ps: watch out as Roland Smeenk put it:
"Some technical highlights ..... awkward third person navigation"
in other word the navigation is What the fuck ?!?

Hey, thank's both, guys bounce

I'll say in advance : Unlike most of my postings on forums, which are mainly made for "making waves", I did place this thread here because I love the topic (GUIs, Directories and Displays).

So, Fab, thank's for posting about Smeenk's proto here.

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT SAMPLE SOOO LONG !!!!

- and also thank's for the "VRMLized Google Image Search Page", which is on another thread, but I did enjoy it as if it would have been posted here on this one (I'm just still missing Erik's - Raging Storm's - point of view/ViewPoint).

And merci beaucop Alain for the sample Smile ... IT WORKS TRES BIEN !!!

You're a techie-art-teacher or an artistic-tech-theacher !!!

BTW : Isn't it getting time for organizing Louise Meeting 2007 ??? (I need a new T-Shirt).

Cheers to all
