| Hi samdl, "when will abnet support firefox?" The honest answer about a probable direct and native support is negative because Firefox and Chrome are already supported trough IE Tab ("support" because it demands some code efforts to cope with). Another issue: why Firefox? Even if we could do a native Firefox babelx3d/abnet, why not do it for Chrome instead, since it is becoming the most popular browser in PCs and mobile devices; or a native support for all major browsers? Wonder why my friend? I am sure you guess why For those other forum friends that have the same question, please let us remember, for a bit, the story of computing in the late 20 years... Once upon a time there where 2 browsers, Netscape and IE, now there are three, probably 4 or 5 with Safari and opera (if we forget to mention the mobile ones emerging) and besides that there are several operating systems with their own graphical systems and inconsistencies. The creators/owners of the browsers have different ideas about security and standards and keeping up with the constant updates is a mission impossible indeed, even for one browser. Let me tell another story. For years Microsoft tried to keep his IE browser with a version for the Mac operating System. Because IE has so many technologies and the problems with Mac OS keep coming up all the time (and probably for other reasons too) this giant software company had to drop it, so no more IE for MAC. I know people are asking this mostly because bitmanagement tells stories about having a vrml/x3d plugin for all systems. Yes, you can dream with them, so it is a bed time story hehehe! It is still far from the truth. There are "some" problems to overcome, not small. -Things run differently on different browsers and different OS (problems with scenes and animations) Other than that I have observed problems with x3d and x3dv implementation and bs contact 8 is for now a bugged version, should still be a beta but trade reasons have pushed it up front before time. Please don't read this as a profound critic to bs contact or bitmanagement company. Bs contact is often considered the best vrml/x3d plugin around and is made by a dedicated company that is doing a great work but, as far as I know, it is a small company and the defy is enormous, even for a much much much larger company. We should know that it is not a mere technical problem, business interests are involved too, and sometimes damaging actions are taken for "political" reasons, not technical. One industry example not related directly with 3D: remember a few years ago when Apple and Adobe where not happy with each other for business reasons and Steve Jobs announced that flash technology was banished from ios devices? He tried to justify that with technical reasons, security etc., but everyone knows that was a mere "abusive" business measure. Fortunately flash is back on ios. Babelx3d/ABNet in all browsers and OS's ?To end this never ending story I must say that we have to thank IE Tab people (www.ietab.net) because they creatively solved the unsolvable problem of browser compatibility. The IE Tab idea is so great that they are working now on a ie tab for MAC, so we can dream about Babelx3d/ABNet worlds on Mac. There is also a good chance (not tested it yet) to work on linux since there is a version of bs contact for linux and using wine we can run IE on Linux (more info here http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-to-install-internet-explorer-on-linux.html) IE Tab guys pin pointed the real problem. Since it is a mission impossible to make all code workarounds to cope with inconsistencies of different browsers and keep all this up to date, the only possible solution for specific environments is to use the specified browser or, alternatively, use a IE "window" (a IE Tab) inside Firefox or Chrome and keep using the browser interface you are used to. You can criticize IE Tab ... politically, but technically it is for me a good and efficient solution. vcard

( click on the image ) Very nice demo and highly educational! Well done Alain If you have the time, elaborate the explanation a bit more and post it at babel please . by the way, I think seen once one phantom made by you with this kind of light or ambiance(?) - samdl wrote:

Thanks samd for alerting about this. Its only a unwanted "side effect" of the automatic install. I will think about a workaround. It is better to use version 7212 because previous versions have various degrees of bugs or shortcomings and may not work well with specific worlds. - alain wrote:

1 ok I will do 2 humm i had been a phantom in Praha, an homage for my dead father , but it was just transparency , what is funny in the cathedral is that they did the lightsray ( scuse my english) from an extrusion.. I will say it on babel 3 the direct link is boring , they ask email , it is not friendly for friends who ask , LOL if I rember well ( ?) you hosted it with a direct link on babel or odisseia , but I am may be wrong ...bad memory 4- I find one or 2 friends each year to share vrml on Macs , thats bore me , they all fly away LOL | |

| Hi alain, Yes XP is a good OS, had it on one machine until recently. The prob with XP is Microsoft policy. The support ends in about one year (April 8, 2014 ), so you need to move on soon because after that date there will be no more security updates, patches, etc. The best OS to upgrade? Now windows 7 is the standard and win 8 is still a wait an see OS, has still problems, the new interface is a mess ( I call it "Window" not windows, because we have only one window despite having a 30" screen, a big pain) and we need to rely on a version of the so called "old" desktop interface. Yet, even the desktop interface is a cut version of the classic windows interface with limitations (one is the absence of the practical start button) that seriously affect the usability of the new windows 8. Had to look elsewhere to improve windows 8 usability to a decent level: freeware solutions that bring back the indispensable desktop "start button". There is one, at least, serious good thing about windows 8, it is fast, really fast!!!! Can bring your abandoned old PC to life again. I have one small netPC (with an atom single core processor) that no one used anymore because it was too slow with windows 7, but now it works at the speed of light with windows 8. Microsoft did a lousy job changing the interface from windows to "one" window, but in pure terms of code looks like this is gonna be the best Windows OS. I can now browse almost every vrml world around Babelx3d/abnet with an old atom netpc (no dedicated graphic card). What else? vcard (PS: I do not advise changing from windows 7 to windows 8, for now is better to wait and see how it goes) | |
