Basic objects are a wierd markup language involving primatives, modifiers and boolean operations.
In theory 3DS Max and say lightwave could convert secondlife objects into scripting commands to do the same modifiers directly. Personally I don't think its worth doing, you'd get less polygons making the objects properly using mesh editing.
The reverse isn't possible, for objects anyway as secondlife has no concept of a mesh.
I did find this page, its not dated but I suspect its recent. http://secondlife.com/community/avatar.php Its the secondlife avatars in obj format, so creators can make the mesh in a real 3d app (or make animations in poser) and upload it. Also the animations in BVH format.
So if a creator makes avatars, clothing or animations this way then they can convert them to vrml or any other 3d format.

| If you look at the slexchange site swaffette posted earlier, you'll notice most of the things for sale there are avatars and their clothing. The avatars are the most realistic thing in secondlife by the looks.
I'll bet swaffette spends more time offline making things than she spends time in secondlife itself.

| Secondlife client now opensource http://lindenlab.com/press/releases/01_08_07 Note that most of the scripting is run on the servers, so some problems will still have to be fixed by lindenlabs themselves. Several linden staff admin the server software is inefficient and drains too much CPU power, but then say they have no plans to fix it The vrml community are unsure of what this means, on one hand lindenlabs are essentually getting free bugs fixes for a paying service. On the other hand it does mean secondlife members can modify the client to better suit their needs. | |

In reply i have to say that is not quite true - all the shoes and buildings i make HAVE to be made in the game you cannot make them outside the game if they are made of prims = primitive shapes - However i could make the clothes textures outside of sl i do not need to be in the game for that - however it makes more sense to be as u can keep previewing the clothes on the avatar rather than a flat template - Some creators have complained about this -that they really need to be in the game most of the time -and so on slexchange there is now an opportunity to download and trial then purchase a program that will allow u to see the clothes on an avatar outside the game or even draw straight onto the avatar. I havent tried this yet though. There are many issues with working on the templates - hard to line up seams and lower parts of jackets coats etc are on a different template to upper body parts so you need often to upload then try on ur av then adjust on the template accordingly and upload again etc - uploads cost 10 lindens each . Many people are now coming to the game due to the publicity EXPECTING to make money , this is not why i joined i started the business purely to pay for the land i wanted to own and pay for playing the game itself ( more land u own more u pay for playing the game) A warning too it is just like any rl business - it could take up to 2 years to really take off as it has mine - all the same rules apply - needing to build up stock , advertising , building up a name etc. Sorry ive strayed off the point abit lol! Consequentially i spend most of my time online in game -i may have my head in PSP often but my avatar will be in sl lol

There is a free secondlife plugin for the free blender3d. This will let you make prims outside of secondlife and then upload them into the game. http://www.blender3d.org/ http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=149111 Some talk about the plugin here: http://www.3pointd.com/20060602/create-sl-objects-in-blender-if-you-dare/ - swaffette wrote:

Kind of sad really, to make real money in secondlife you obviously need to be well known and talented at creating objects. In Blaxxun's communities anything made by teeny is either expensive or extra hard to get, same thing really. According to secondlife's own stats only a small percentage of the community make enough money to live onhttp://secondlife.com/whatis/economy_stats.php for december, of the 17,327 members with positive income only 1632 were making more than US$200 a month. If you have a lot of secondlife land the money could simply disappear into the fees on that.
