Ask hermetic, he offered to host and maintain a bxx server, but someone else needed to provide the $500 Blaxxun Server license. I couldn't get anyone to cough up the money needed

Now the "blaxxun server" is down, I find I can still access wrls using blaxxun Contact 5.1

Also, because I prefer RADvrml to VRMLpad, I have stayed in Windows 98.

I wish to continue encouraging 5.1's usage, if only to avoid the obnoxious floating banners that spoil the more recent demo versions.

But, I need to know...

1. does anyone else still use 5.1?

2. Does 5.1 even work in more recent Windows and/or MSIE versions?

Basically he says that $500 is is not appropriate for Blaxxun's crappy 10 year old software and he wants a discount !

I have to agree, mind you it is discounted from its previous price of $1500 and the original $10,000. Down side is Blaxxun are impossible to contact some of the time, which is a pain as the licenses stop working if you change servers.

Version 5.1 is more stable like version 5.3
I use only version 5.1, and BSContact version 6.109

Prof, I have an ideea to know 'who is online' . Or, 'this sever is on line'.

For this, use an URL to an bitmap from server ... When that server is 'online' , the bitmap can be accesed, and if that server is 'not on line', the bitmap can not be accesed ...
For this, need a list with all servers ...

And, also, need an site of the sites ! Or an forum of forums ...



The forum of all administrators . Any administrator, must to have a page in RICK's forum, with all reprezentative for him, with links to his sites ... and so on ... A kind of 'Republic of administrators' ...

And over all this, become RICK's chat server : ABNet chat server ...

The site hosting the chat (blaxxun don't care so not them) should at least have:
1- a FAQ and a link to the 3d plugin.
2- a forum, or a link to an existing forum which is big enough
3- a collection of links to various general purpose vrml sites
4- a proper 3d portal world, something impressive looking.
5- a list of worlds, as in and add your own directory with report dead link button.

Optional
5a- a 3d in-world version of the list of worlds.
6- a fancy vrml webring, where the navigation is entirely 3d (stan was working on this ages ago)
7- a collection of avatars
8- a build your own avatar tool, not as hard as it sounds if done with basic geometry, or limit the options.
9- a news page

Have a look at http://www.vr4all.net/, that is an example of how a 3d chat portal should behave. Yes its in french, but Alain will just understand all the words there hahaha.

Actually I was looking at Alain's links the other day and found the one for X's site wasn't working anymore. It was the forum he used that has vanished.

I didn't think to search around to see if the site was elsewhere.

I asked X , he will tell news soon I guess..

I just about killed the last server I ran the chat on, so I've arranged something with more power this time. The chat won't be anything like the last one was setup.

Half the previous worlds that were using my chat didn't work properly. Bad viewpoints or lighting, too many separate chat worlds to meet anyone. Its dumb when there are 4 people in places like Oddessey, but all in separate chats.

So coming....um..... when I have it ready.

edit: the new server was arranged some time ago, taken a while to get it setup to fully working condition.
